What Is Atrial Fibrillation?
Atrial fibrillation (A-tre-al fi-bri-LA-shun), or AF, is the most common type of arrhythmia (ah-RITH-me-ah). An arrhythmia is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm.

AF occurs if rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the heart's two upper chambers—called the atria (AY-tree-uh)—to fibrillate. The term "fibrillate" means to contract very fast and irregularly.

In AF, blood pools in the atria. It isn't pumped completely into the heart's two lower chambers, called the ventricles (VEN-trih-kuls). As a result, the heart's upper and lower chambers don't work together as they should.

People who have AF may not feel symptoms. However, even when AF isn't noticed, it can increase the risk of stroke. In some people, AF can cause chest pain or heart failure, especially if the heart rhythm is very rapid.

AF may happen rarely or every now and then, or it may become an ongoing or long-term heart problem that lasts for years.

Stroke Warning Signs

SPOT A STROKE F.A.S.T.

F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs of a stroke. When you can spot the signs, you'll know quickly that you need to call 9-1-1 for help. This is important because the sooner a stroke victim gets to the hospital, the sooner they'll get treatment. And that can make a remarkable difference in their recovery.

F.A.S.T. IS:

Face Drooping Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

Arm Weakness Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

Speech Difficulty Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like "the sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly?

Time to call 911 If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK SOMEONE IS HAVING A STROKE

Immediately call 9-1-1 or the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number so an ambulance can be sent.  Also, check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared. A clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may improve the chances of getting better but only if you get them help right away.

A TIA or transient ischemic attack is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms. TIA symptoms usually only last a few minutes but, if left untreated, people who have TIAs have a high risk of stroke. Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce the risk of a major stroke.

BEYOND F.A.S.T. — OTHER SYMPTOMS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the leg

  • Sudden confusion or trouble understanding

  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes

  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

young woman 28 yrs. old with Lock-in-syndrome.

This story was just forwarded to me by my friend Suzy Everhart Fehlig about a young woman 28 yrs. old with Lock-in-syndrome. Locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a patient is aware and awake but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes.

Kirby Walker is a 28-year old woman from Northwest Arkansas who suffered a massive stroke on December 22, 2012. She is in VERY critical condition (Locked-In Syndrome), and desperately needs our love, faith and support. She's a mother to two beautiful baby boys, and a fiance to a wonderful man. Kirby's a third grade teacher who's very dedicated to her students, family, and friends. She is very loved and needed. Please share her story, and keep her in your prayers.

Childhood Obesity

Thank you for championing obesity prevention
District145 Alvarado [District145.Alvarado@house.state.tx.us]

Wilson, Maricela G.
Dear Marcie,

Thank you for contacting me and expressing your support for HB 275 and HB 276.

Texas has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the nation, with more than 20 percent of children being considered obese. Children are living more sedentary lifestyles, which make the need for increased physical activity and more health education in our schools more important than ever. While both of these bills alone will not eliminate obesity in Texas, these bills are a step in the right direction in an effort to reduce childhood obesity.

It is going to take a comprehensive approach with individuals, families, businesses, government and communities all working together to address this issue. Again, thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of assistance on any matter.
Heavy Drinkers at Greater Risk for Stroke
Sept 10, 2012 -- Heavy drinkers may be at a much greater risk for a bleeding stroke, a new study suggests. People who drank about three or more alcoholic drinks per day also had the strokes almost a decade and a half before those who didn’t drink quite as much. The findings appear in Neurology. Exac
